INTERVIEW FOR BLACK CANDLE (LUXEMBOURG)

here the interview with this old school black metal band:

1.- demons greetings. I see that you have existed since 1994 (the year in which AQUELARRE zine was also born). Those years were crucial above all due to the events that occurred in Norway and the inner circle. What did you decide to create your black metal band? I ask you this question why after what I said before !! Lots of black metal bands came out all over the world.

Rune Tristanne: Hello and thank you for you interest in Black Candle. Back at that Time we where all fascinated by the early Norwegian BM scene. It was a very special time and Black metal was something very obscure and extreme. This music was so very dark and profound and a new feeling was born at this time. I think after hearing the Emperor/Enslaved Split CD and A Blaze in the Northern Sky by Darkthrone i had a strong desire to create my own Black metal Band.

2.- According to what I know of your country is that it has many forests, and old houses from medieval times, I think it is a suitable environment and atmosphere to recreate the right feeling to play or create black metal, what do you think about this?

Rune Tristanne: Yes and No. Luxembourg is a very bourgeois Country and everything is only about Money and Luxury and on the other side you have this silly Catholic Hillbilly mentality. I don’t live in Luxembourg anymore since 10 Years. But your right there are still a lot of Dark Castles and beautiful Woods. There are some places that had a strong Impact on my musical work. 

3.- Let's talk about your productions you have about two demos one ep and three full length which of all these productions you have had the most inconvenience to do it can you tell us as an anecdote ¿

Rune Tristanne: There are two Demos from the old Days and one Ep and four Albums. Since „Lead me to the Tombs“ in 2006 all music is created and recorded in my own Studio Nowhere Studios and recently at Arphs Kirkel Kerker Studios. It is not easy to work with other People. The most inconvenient record Session was the recording of „Lost Light of the North“ that was a very frustrating time for Black Candle. Recording the „Thou Angel of Poisonous Flowers“ was even more a catastrophe. A Nightmare!!! My favorite all time fave

Black Candle record is „Smoke and Monoliths“ and the brand new Album „Trees in Space“ that will be finished very soon. Me and Arph had a lot of Fun and Joy when we created Trees in Space. We have the perfect conditions now for creating our Music together. Black Candle has reached the perfect balance now. Now it is what it always should have been. Im very proud to work with Arph he is the perfect Man for this.

4.-Do you have or have other musical tastes, apart from black metal, any project parallel to the band?

Rune Tristanne: Yes many others. I love stuff like Chelsea Wolfe, Swans, The Sisters of

Mercy, Nine inch Nails, Emma Ruth Rundle, Alice Cooper, Bauhaus, Mazy Star, The

Virgin Prunes, Coil, Psychic Tv, Current 93, Sonic Youth, Throbbing Gristle, Electric Wizard, Black Sabbath, Yob, Rozz Williams, Lingua Ignota, The Cure ant most of all the old Christian Death and even music by Lana del Rey, i really  love her music. And i am a big Lover of Dark Ambient Musik and psychedelic and 70ies Stuff.

5.- The last album where they appear is a Split that came out on cassette as were the sales of the cassette, are there still available? What Black Candle material do you currently have available?

Rune Tristanne: You can find the Tape at Narbentage Production Shop maybe. Most of our Stuff is sold out. But Narbentage will do a special Tape Box with us with all our Records and unreleased and Rare Tracks. We are working on it. It will be a Collectors Item.

6.- Is there any material from you that would be out of stock, and if so, could you reissue it?

Rune Tristanne: Everything is mostly sold out. I only have some T-shirts left and Posters. It would be great to release everything on vinyl. But you should find our old Stuff on Discogs i think.

7.-would you have no problem playing with death metal bands or other trends within the underground? Or is it only and exclusively with black metal bands with whom they would share the stage, what can you tell us about this?

Rune Tristanne: Live Gigs are not possible at the Moment we are more into a creating Records Mood. Live Gigs are not very Important to us anymore. I

make a lot of Gigs with Old Pagan. Death metal is not really my Kind of Music but i have no Problem with these Guys.

8 .- “Lost light of the north” is an album that I really like, also most of its productions are to my liking and I think that the good listener of the style would also like it, what theme of this album “lost light of the north “is that you or you like it and why?

Rune Tristanne: I really like that Album but it is not my Favorite. It has a strong nordic Flair. I did not write the Lyrics for this Album. It is very detached. Its about getting lost in Thoughs and Woods and leaving the World behind and entering the Realm of Nature. To become a silent Part of this.

9.- From what we have read in its history, we know that Luxembourg is one of the richest European countries in the world that currently exists, tell us a little about it and because you think that this remains so until today, seeing that the world economy is going to the ground!

Rune Tristanne: That’s because most of People are greedy Bastards and

Gangsters. You have to pay 800000 euro for a normal House. I don’t like Luxembourg. I did not fit in and i never found some real soulmates. I always felt uncomfortable in this Country. I was always some kind of a loner and most of the Time i felt misunderstood with my ideas and Concepts. I never felt happy. So i leaved Luxembourg and i found some real good People in Germany with the same Ideas and same Goals and the Will to spend energy and Time to create something great and Powerful.

10.-in the topic “in the ghost mountain” do you mean a story or a legend that you have had any experience with this?

Rune Tristanne: That was a feeling i get when i was in Norway in 2015. I saw these fantastic Landscapes covered in Fog and Snow and I was fantasizing about Ghosts of Ancient Times hunting these Mountains. So i made a song about it. The Riff of that Song is very old. A remaining riff from 1996.

11.-from what I have seen both Rune (bass. Vocals, guitars ..) and Arphyrios (vocals ..) have had parallel projects to Black Candle and what strikes me is that the bands are from Germany, I think it is because of the proximity of your country with them right? What can you tell us about all this?

Rune Tristanne: Yes a lot. Back in 2018 we created „Hermetic Self Destruction

Ritual“ this is a Dark Ambient Band. We released 2 Tape Albums in 2019

„Chapel of Baphomet“ and „Into the Black Boiling Sea. The new and third

Album „Kaos above, Love below“ is out now on Vinyl at Narbentage

Productions. HSDR is very dark and ritualistic. Arph has his other Projects, Arkrohn and Flutwacht and i have my Solo Project Deformation Guaranteed.

The first Album „Pagan Girl“ is ready to be released by Narbentage

Productions in the next Time. Deformation Guaranteed is between Doom and Post Punk/Gothic Rock. And since 2019 i am Vocalist in the German Black metal Band Old Pagan. We all live into Saarland Germany.

12.-What method do you use when composing the themes of your songs, do the lyrics, try the riffs, tell us a bit !!

Rune Tristanne: Mostly it starts with a riff. I rehearse it into my studio and then i add the drums and Bass, and the Song is created step by step. Then in Arphs Studio he adds his parts, the Ambience and Effects and finally we do the

Vocals.  Sometime i am inspired by a song Titel and i try to create the fitting Atmosphere.

13.-What instruments and brands in the music market do you recommend to new bands who want to enter this dark, gloomy genre of blasphemous black metal

Rune Tristanne: Well i don’t know? Everyone has to find his fitting instrument. I prefer Fender Jaguar Guitars and Ibanez. In the old Days i used a Gibson Explorer. A very good guitar.

14.-What about your next releases? Can you tell me something?

Rune Tristanne: It will be called „Trees in Space“ and will last about 55 minutes of pure Darkness and Witchcraft. It is a new step for Black Candle it will be very experimental, it is a mix of Black metal and Dark Ambient. For all those who like to listen, we have 2 brand new Songs on our Band camp, Trees in Space II and The House of Wolves, both songs are rough mixes and are not completed.
